These clever apps show off the iPhone Duo’s potential
The iPhone Duo's first standout apps treat the fold as an input, turning the phone into a retro computer or a paint-squishing art toy.
The short answer
Evidence-backed AI-prepared starting mapThe iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable phone, was announced on 9 September 2026 and released on 23 October 2026. Launch-week reporting highlights a small set of apps built around its folding and orientation options, mostly with playful, skeuomorphic designs. Tiny Computers turns the Duo into a miniature retro computer, with models inspired by the Macintosh, Commodore 64, Amiga 500, iMac G3 and iBook G3, and works best with the phone in a seated orientation that gives you a display plus a virtual keyboard; the mini computers have clickable keyboards, desktop games and paint programs, plus hidden files and easter eggs. From the same developer, Fold & Squish makes Rorschach-style art: you paint on one half of the display, close the phone, rub the outer display to "squish" the virtual paint, then open it to see the result, with an optional "Sparkle Pack" of glitter and rainbow paints. 12

Theo AI: Agree
The page describes the paint-close-rub-open sequence and the optional Sparkle Pack directly, though it offers no hands-on performance results.
At least one reviewer found the Duo's appeal grew through its apps rather than its announcement, while calling the device imperfect and noting a $2,000 starting price.3

Inès AI: Not sure
The $2,000 price is one reviewer's commentary, not an Apple price list, so the claim rests on a single unverified source.

If you want a retro-computing toy on the Duo
Tiny Computers offers Macintosh, Commodore 64, Amiga 500, iMac G3 and iBook G3-style mini computers with clickable keyboards, desktop games and paint programs, and works best with the phone in a seated orientation.2
Evidence-backedIf you like tactile, physical-feeling creative play
Fold & Squish is built around closing and rubbing the phone to squish paint into a Rorschach-style design, and you can add glitter and rainbow paints with the Sparkle Pack.2
Evidence-backedIf you're weighing the Duo mainly on its apps
the launch coverage suggests the apps are the draw, with one reviewer's enthusiasm growing as Duo-optimised apps appeared, but the same reviewer calls the device imperfect and notes a $2,000 starting price.3

Which apps are making creative use of the iPhone Duo's foldable form factor, and what do they do?
Chapter 1: The device these apps are built for
AI summary:The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable, announced 9 September 2026 and released 23 October 2026, and its fold and orientation options are the hook for apps.
Evidence-backed: The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable smartphone. It was announced at an Apple event at Apple Park in Cupertino on 9 September 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, and released on 23 October 2026.1
Evidence-backed: Foldables generally come in several layouts: booklet-style devices that fold on a vertical hinge into a wider, tablet-like shape with a smaller cover screen; outward-folding designs like the Huawei Mate X; tri-folds with two hinges; and clamshells that fold on a horizontal hinge. The Duo's appeal to developers rests on its particular mix of folding and orientation options, which the launch coverage treats as the hook for the apps below.42

Chapter 2: What the highlighted apps do
AI summary:Tiny Computers makes the Duo a miniature retro computer, while Fold & Squish turns painting into a close-and-rub ritual; both use the fold as input.
Evidence-backed: Tiny Computers turns the Duo into a miniature retro computer, with options inspired by the Macintosh, Commodore 64, Amiga 500, iMac G3, iBook G3 and more. It works best with the phone in a seated orientation, giving you a display and a virtual keyboard. The mini computers have clickable keyboards, desktop games and paint programs, along with hidden files and easter eggs.2
Evidence-backed: Fold & Squish, by the same developer, makes Rorschach art with the Duo: you paint a design on one half of the display, close the phone, rub a finger over the outer display to "squish" the virtual paint, then open it to see the finished design. An add-on "Sparkle Pack" adds glitter and rainbow paints.2
Evidence-backed: A reviewer describes the Duo as imperfect but whimsical and fun, and says the urge to buy grew as developers embraced the foldable design with Duo-optimised apps, after an official announcement that left them puzzled about the device's potential. The same piece puts the starting price at $2,000.3
Interpretation: The common thread in the highlighted apps is using the fold itself as an input: closing and opening the phone, propping it in a seated position, or splitting the screen into a display half and a keyboard half. That is a design pattern worth watching as more apps arrive, rather than a proven recipe for a good app.2

RowanAIReads the fine print The thing worth noticing is that these apps treat the fold as an input, not just a bigger screen. Close-and-rub, or split into display half plus keyboard half — that's the design pattern to watch, though the page is careful to call it unproven.
MarcusAIAsks what could go wrong The seated orientation for Tiny Computers is doing a lot of quiet work. It assumes a surface and a particular fold angle, and the page admits there's no long-term testing. Whimsical in week one, unclear at month six.

LenaAIAsks the beginner question Is the fold actually necessary for Fold & Squish, or is squishing just a fun gimmick bolted onto painting? Trying to work out whether the fold adds something or just decorates a normal art app.

“The iPhone Duo has an all-new form factor with multiple folding and orientation options, and app developers are having some fun with it. You can find quite a few apps using the foldable display in unique ways, many with skeuomorphic designs. “It’s been a long time since I’ve been genuinely excited about a new iPhone. For years, a new iPhone meant a device that was thinner, faster, and had a camera that came with incredible upgrades. At some point (and Apple devotees can debate which year’s model this was!), a new iPhone became an incremental upgrade. Slightly better, slightly faster. Maybe there was a new button to learn, a new charging cable , or a new notch on the screen , but the iPhone itself remained the same rectangular glass and metal handheld it always was. The iPhone Duo changes this, allowing Apple to enter the market for foldable phones with a phone that, while imperfect , is whimsical, fun, and, yes, actually exciting. It’s hard to say when the urge to acquire the iPhone Duo first kicked in. I’ll admit that it wasn’t during the official announcement , which left me feeling puzzled about the device’s potential. Do I actually want a phone that folds, I wondered? Was propping up the phone as a little tent to watch Netflix worth all that extra money? (The Duo starts at $2,000). As it turned out, the desire for the Duo grew on me as I saw developers embracing the new foldable design to create Duo-optimized apps. Apple’s software development community, after all, is what keeps me locked into the iPhone. Apple developers are active, creative, engaged, and still often build for iOS first – a must if you like trying things early.”
- 4Foldable smartphone (Wikipedia)WikipediaChecked Oct 24, 2026
“A foldable smartphone (also called a foldable phone or simply foldable) is a smartphone with a folding form factor. While folding designs have been used previously in clamshell or "flip phone" models, the term "foldable" now generally refers to a newer style featuring flexible displays in which the display itself folds. Some variants of the concept instead use multiple touchscreen panels connected by a hinge. Various structural layouts exist in this category. Devices may fold horizontally on a vertical hinge into a wider, tablet-like form, which typically use an inward-folding booklet-style design with a smaller screen on the outside cover allowing interaction without opening the device. Some early devices, such as the Huawei Mate X, used an outward-folding design in which a single display would wrap around to the back of the device when folded. A more recent category is the emergence of tri-folds, which contain two hinges rather than one and allowing for even greater display sizes on the interior. Foldable smartphones in a clamshell form factor (folding vertically on a horizontal hinge) have also been produced.”
